Whether you're a startup brand launching your first product or an established company expanding into new markets, you likely have questions about cosmetic packaging. Below we've compiled answers to the most frequently asked questions we receive from clients around the world, organized by topic.
Material Selection FAQs
There is no single 'best' material — the right choice depends on your product type, budget, and brand positioning. PET offers excellent clarity for water-based products. PETG is tougher and FDA-compliant for premium items. PP is cost-effective and chemical-resistant. Glass provides a luxury feel but adds shipping weight. We recommend consulting with a packaging engineer for your specific needs.
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a clear, lightweight, recyclable plastic ideal for water-based products like toners and lotions. PETG (Glycol-modified PET) is tougher, more impact-resistant, and offers better chemical resistance for oil-based formulas. PETG also meets FDA 21 CFR requirements for food-contact materials, making it preferred for premium skincare packaging that requires higher durability.
Choose glass when your product requires a premium, luxury brand perception — glass has a weight and feel that signals quality. Glass is also chemically inert, making it ideal for sensitive formulations, essential oils, or products with high alcohol content. However, glass is heavier (increasing shipping costs) and more fragile. For cost-conscious brands or products shipping long distances, high-quality PET or PETG can achieve a similar look at lower cost.
Both are common choices for cream jars. PP (Polypropylene) is rigid, has good chemical resistance, and can withstand higher temperatures — making it suitable for hot-fill applications. PE (Polyethylene) is softer and more flexible, providing a better seal but less structural rigidity. Many cream jars use PP for the body and PE for the inner seal to combine the best properties of both materials.
MOQ & Ordering FAQs
The 12,000-piece MOQ covers fixed costs including mold setup, material procurement (factories purchase raw materials in bulk), production line configuration, and quality testing. For new clients, we can accommodate smaller trial orders of 3,000-5,000 pieces at a 15-25% premium. Alternatively, choosing from our catalog of 200+ stock molds can eliminate mold costs entirely and reduce the effective minimum.
Our base price is for MOQ of 12,000 pieces. As order volume increases, per-unit costs decrease: 50,000+ pieces enjoy 5% off, 100,000+ pieces get 7% off, 200,000+ pieces receive 9% off, and 500,000+ pieces qualify for 10% or more discount (negotiable). These savings come from more efficient production runs and reduced per-unit fixed costs.
Our standard payment terms are 50% deposit with the order and 50% balance before shipment. For established clients with a strong track record, we offer 50/40/10 (deposit/before shipment/after arrival). Qualified clients may also use sight L/C. We accept T/T (Telegraphic Transfer) bank wire and PayPal for transactions.
Lead Time & Production FAQs
A typical cosmetic packaging order takes 25-50 days from order confirmation to shipment. With existing molds, the timeline is 25-30 days: 7-10 days for material procurement, 10-15 days for production, and 5 days for QC and packing. For new molds, add 15-25 days for mold design and manufacturing. Rush orders may be possible with expedited fees.
Yes, we can prioritize urgent orders with expedited production. This typically shortens lead time by 7-10 days but may incur a 10-15% rush fee depending on factory capacity. We recommend placing urgent orders at least 4 weeks ahead of your deadline. For existing stock molds, we can often deliver samples within 7 days and production within 20 days.
We follow a three-tier quality control system: (1) Incoming QC inspects raw materials before production begins; (2) In-process QC monitors production parameters, dimensional accuracy, and visual quality during manufacturing; (3) Final QC conducts random sampling per AQL standards (ANSI/ASQ Z1.4) before shipment. We also offer third-party inspection through SGS, Bureau Veritas, or your designated agency.
Mold & Sampling FAQs
Custom mold costs vary widely based on complexity: simple single-cavity molds for standard bottles start at ¥5,000-15,000; multi-cavity or complex designs cost ¥20,000-50,000 or more. Factors include number of cavities, mold steel quality, product complexity (undercuts, threads), and tolerance requirements. We provide a detailed mold cost breakdown in every quotation. Multiple cost-sharing options are available.
Our sampling process: (1) Share your design brief or reference images; (2) Our engineering team provides 3D renderings for approval; (3) Upon approval, we create T1 samples from the mold; (4) Samples are shipped to you via DHL or UPS (3-5 days); (5) You review and provide feedback; (6) We make adjustments if needed and send revised samples. Standard sample turnaround is 7-15 days. Sample fees may apply for new clients but are deducted from production orders.
We offer four mold cost sharing options: (1) Client-owned — pay 100% upfront, mold is yours permanently, no fee on reorders; (2) Amortized — mold cost split across the first 3-5 production runs; (3) Factory-shared — factory covers mold cost if you commit to a minimum volume (e.g., 200,000+ pieces within 12 months); (4) Stock mold — use an existing mold from our catalog with minor modifications at minimal cost.
Certification & Export FAQs
The required certifications depend on your target market. For the US, FDA compliance (21 CFR) is essential. For Europe, REACH and ROHS are mandatory. GMP/ISO 22716 is increasingly requested by international brand partners. We provide certified materials and can arrange third-party testing through accredited labs like SGS, Intertek, or TÜV.
FDA registration is not legally mandatory for all cosmetic packaging products, but virtually all US retailers and brand distributors require FDA compliance documentation. Having FDA-certified materials demonstrates your commitment to safety and quality. Materials that comply with FDA 21 CFR for food-contact applications are generally accepted. We provide FDA compliance documentation with all standard materials.
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) is the European Union's chemical safety regulation. Any cosmetic packaging exported to EU and EEA member states must be REACH-compliant. This means all substances in your packaging materials must be registered and below restricted limits. We provide REACH compliance documentation including SVHC declarations with our product shipments.
Standard certification testing typically takes 7-15 business days. Full compliance documentation including supply chain declarations requires 3-4 weeks. Costs are reasonable: FDA compliance testing ¥2,000-5,000 per material, REACH SVHC testing ¥3,000-8,000, and ROHS testing ¥1,500-3,000. We can include certification testing as part of your production order to streamline the process.
Eco-friendly Packaging FAQs
We offer several sustainable packaging options: (1) PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) materials — recycled PET and PP with up to 100% recycled content; (2) Mono-material designs — using a single plastic type for the entire package to improve recyclability; (3) Lightweight designs — reducing material usage by 15-30% through optimized wall thickness; (4) Biodegradable materials — PLA and PHA options for specific applications; (5) Refillable packaging systems — durable outer packages with replaceable inner refills.
Generally, eco-friendly materials cost 10-30% more than virgin plastics, though the premium varies by material type and availability. PCR materials are typically 10-20% more expensive. Biodegradable options like PLA can be 20-30% more. However, as demand grows and technology improves, these costs are decreasing. Many brands find that the sustainability positioning justifies the added cost, and some pass it on as a premium feature.
